Four-bin Kerbside Waste System from February 2021

Introduction of a fourth glass-only wheelie bin for all residential properties that receive a kerbside bin service. The glass-only bin, which will have a purple lid will be collected every four weeks and residents cannot opt out of this service. After the service changes in February next year, residents will no longer be able to put glass in their yellow-lid recycling bins.

Another change will be the acceptance of food waste in the existing garden organics bin. To support the introduction of the Food Organics & Garden Organics (FOGO) service, each property will also receive a small kitchen caddy and a pack of compostable liners for collecting scraps in the kitchen and transporting out to the existing kerbside garden organics bin.

From 1 February 2021, the new standard kerbside bin service for residential properties will be;

  • 1 x 120 litre waste bin collected alternating fortnights
  • 1 x 240 litre recycling bin collected alternating fortnights
  • 1 x 240 litre FOGO (Food Organics & Garden Organics), collected weekly
  • 1 x 140 litre glass-only bin (purple lid) collected four weekly.

Surf Coast Shire will also be replacing any dark green or burgundy lids on waste bins with a red lid. This will bring the lid colours in line with Australian standards and help eliminate confusion about what goes in each bin. This changeover will take place on bin collection days so the contractor can access the bins without entering the property. Delivery of glass-only bins and kitchen caddies will commence later this year and we are currently working with the bin supplier on the delivery schedule.

As part of this process, we are contacting owners’ corporations for multi-unit dwellings across the municipality to discuss the number of type of bins required at these properties to meet residents’ needs, while also ensuring bins can be safely stored and presented for collection. Properties in the following streets in Torquay;

  • Seaspray Place
  • Coast Drive
  • Driftwood Place
  • Shell Place
  • Shore Place
  • Sunset Place
  • Pebble Place
  • Bunker Place
  • 51-63 Sands Boulevard
  • 2-8 Sands Terrace

The Shire recognises that addresses with multiple residences or smaller lots may have limited storage space for bins so they may benefit from a bin-sharing arrangement. This would mean increasing the size of some bins to reduce the overall bin numbers. Residents may also consider downsizing their existing 240 litre organics bin to a 140 litre FOGO bin if they don’t have large amounts of garden waste, remembering the FOGO bin will be collected weekly from 1 February 2021.
